FLASH FLOOD WATCH for MAUI COUNTY

It poured rain all day on Maui today ... now it really looks like winter is here, in addition to the BIG WAVES.

You can sign up for email notifications of severe weather conditions on Maui. Here is a sample of what you'd get on a day like to today.....

FLOOD NOTIFICATION #04

FLASH FLOOD WARNING

1. EVENT: The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a FLASH FLOOD
WARNING for MAUI & MOLOKAI in effect UNTIL 5:30 p.m.

FLASH FLOOD WARNIN G MEANS A FLASH FLOOD IS IMMINENT OR
OCCURRING; TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY.

2. EFFECTS: At 2:20 p.m. radar showed heavy rain over central and west Maui. The
area of rainfall has been spreading slowly southeast. Civil Defense reported flooding
and hazardous conditions along the Haleakala Highway. Other locations in the
warning include but are not limited to Kahului, Wailuku, Haiku, Paia, Kula, Kihei and
Lahaina.

At 2:29 p.m. Maui Civil Defense reported flooding from heavy rains over central
Molokai. Highway 450 has been closed between mile markers 4 and 13. Rainfall is
expected to diminish slowly but heavy runoff and flooding will persist over the next
several hours. Other locations in the warning include but are not limited to
Kaunakakai, Kualapuu, Kamalo, Halawa Valley and highway 450.

3. PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND NOW. STAY
A WAY FROM STREAMS AND LOW LYING AREAS PRONE TO FLOODING.
EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM THIS STORM WILL CAUSE FLASH FLOODING OF
STREAMS AND COULD ALSO TRIGGER ROCK AND MUDSLIDES IN STEEP
TERRAIN. BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS SINCE IT IS HARDER TO SEE FLASH
FLOODING IN THE DARK. AVOID TRAVEL.

MOTORISTS SHOULD BE ALERT FOR FLOODING AND SHOULD NOT
ATTEMPT TO CROSS FAST FLOWING OR RISING WATER. MANY FLASH
FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR WHEN MOTORISTS TRY CROSSING FLOODED
ROADWAYS. TURN AROUND. DON'T DROWN.

Report flooding conditions to the police or Civil Defense officials for relay to the
National Weather Service.

4. INFORMATION: Civil Defense will continue to monitor the situation. Please listen
to your local radio and TV stations or NOAA Weather Radio for any updates. NOAA
Weather Radio broadcasts can be reached by calling the following numbers: for
