The Englishman's Boy - set in Regina

And now for something completely different... this is a shot from the set of the Canadian production of The Englishman's Boy, based on the novel of the same name, by the Canadian author Guy Vanderhaeghe.



This location is near the Qu'Appelle Valley in Southern Saskatchewan just north of Regina. The buildings are part of Fort Benton which was in Montana. Based on a true story, the film details the events of the Cypress Hills Massacre. If you live in Canada, you will be able to see this miniseries when it airs on CBC sometime in 2007.

Real Portugese Sausage made on Maui

I've been meaning to blog this for a long time. Are you a fan of Portugese Sausage? I am, and especially of homemade sausage.


These pics are taken at a friend's house in Makawao area, on a day when they were making a batch of homemade sausage from scratch. Not only do they grind up the pork meat, season it and stuff it into natural casings, they also smoke them on site for 4-6 hours in a homemade smoker.


I happened upon the scene, so helped with the tying and stringing up on guava wood poles. Of course I was rewarded with a bag of excellent sausages the next time I dropped in. Talk about "broke da mout"!

Maui Wind Power - now in production at Kaheawa, Maalaea

The Maui News reports that Kaheawa wind farm in Maalaea has been pumping out as much as 15 to 17 megawatts of electricity recently, with 14 of 20 wind generating towers hooked up. Each tower has a 1.5 MW turbine on top, so 14 towers at full blast could generate 21 MW. This is good news for Maui County, which relies heavily on imported diesel to supply electric power to residents and businesses.

Some people here on Maui like to produce their own wind generated power as well, for personal use, usually out of necessity. Some areas of Maui have no connection to the Maui Electric grid. Here's a picture of one of our Bergey 1 KW turbine in Huelo, Haiku. This workhorse has been steadily producing lots of "free" energy for years, with very little maintenance or down time. Thanks to the tradewinds here on the north shore, we can count on plenty of power on most days, and many nights too. We currently have 2 wind generators producing power to 2 homes, and will be erecting a third one soon. We are firm believers in alternative energy, and would like to see more people taking advantage of these ample renewable resources here in Hawaii. Kapila Gardens, Honopou Maui

On the north shore of Maui there is a region known as Honopou. The ample rainfall and warm climate are ideal for growing tropical plants and trees.
