	The old train depot in Upper Paia has been renewed, with some arty shops and a place to sit and have lunch beside the lunch wagon. You'll find the historic Paia Train Depot on Baldwin Ave., about 1 mile up from the Hana Highway and Lower Paia.

Kapila Gardens, Honopou Maui

On the north shore of Maui there is a region known as Honopou. The ample rainfall and warm climate are ideal for growing tropical plants and trees. The area was once populated with thousands of Hawaiians, who cultivated taro and sweet potatoes, and lived off the land. Nowadays it's populated with many types of newcomers, along with kama'aina families who have lived here for generations.

The place to get gravel or rock on Maui is AMERON, and it's centrally located off the Haleakala Highway, near Kahului. They supply the island with sand, gravel, crushed rocks, crushed glass. Wild Pigs on Maui

The wild and feral pigs on Maui are thriving in forested areas on the north shore. Hiking around at the ranch, we have seen as many as 12 pigs in an hour. The place is swarming with baby pigs of all colors, mostly black ones.

This little piggy was on his own and crossed paths with a sharp dog. No bigger than a cat, he was not happy to get picked up and have this picture taken.

This little piggy got caught in a spring loaded trap with his sister. They were released back to the wild. Catch and release. One of these days a BIG pig will get caught.

And this little piggy came all the way home with us. It's currently enjoying lots of pig rations, and a home sweet home.

Queen Mary 2 visits Lahaina Maui

The world's largest ocean liner, the Queen Mary 2, stopped off on the Valley Isle the first week of March, 2006. The massive floating resort anchored off Lahaina, Maui, on it's maiden Pacific voyage. It's designed to carry 3,090 passengers and 1,253 officers and crew, and can speed in excess of 29 knots.

The ship is elegently decorated in the Art Deco style and is a photographer's dream. Eight restaurants, a movie theater, 5 swimming pools, a library and a planetarium are some of the amenities for passengers to enjoy.

Furniture shopping on Maui

Maui now has a great selection of stores selling home furnishings. The nice thing is that they offer a wide range of choices, from inexpensive to very high end.

Here in the Pacific, the Asian influence is very strong, and you can find some fabulous Chinese and Japanese antiques, along with modern reproductions. Armoires, coffee tables, benches and cabinets from the orient are very popular right now, and look great in Hawaiian homes.

Teak furniture from Indonesia is also quite available, and very practical here with so many homes employing outdoor living spaces. Rattan condo furniture is pretty standard and easy to find. If you seek truly unique pieces, there are some specialty shops that continually bring in the best furniture that money can buy. Ulupalakua

On the slopes of Haleakala, there's a region known as Ulupalakua. They say that this translates to "man walking uphill with breadfruit". Across the street from Ulupalakua Ranch Store is the Tedeschi Winery. Once a family home and estate, it's now become a winery/tasting room that produces Maui's only local wines.


Their original claim to fame was a sweet pineapple wine, but they now make a range of wines including a nice sparkling white. If you're driving upcountry, be sure to stop and enjoy the surroundings of this peaceful estate, and learn a little of the history.

If you continue out the winding road, you will come to ranchlands that are still grazed by Maui cattle. The beautiful scenery and vistas at this 3,000 foot altitude makes it a worthwhile outing.

The Lodge at Molokai Ranch

One of the best places to stay on Molokai is the The Lodge and Beach Village, at Molokai Ranch. Because it was raining, we chose to stay at The Lodge, with it's quiet country atmosphere and ambience. It was a truly relaxing experience to sleep in the peaceful surroundings amid thousands of acres of open space. In fact, we didn't even bother to take the trip down to the Beach Village, and vowed to check that out next time.


The Lodge is only 4 years old, and built with an old world style reminiscent of a mountain retreat. The vistas were incredible, and the slow pace was very welcome. All the hotel staff were very friendly and courteous, and treated us like special guests. There's a proper restaurant, a bar with pool table and TV, a big lobby with fireplace, and an outdoor pool. It's just a small hotel really, but it feels like a big one. Activities include horseback riding, acupuncture and massage. Be sure to inquire about Kama'aina rates if you're coming from one of the other Hawaiian islands.
